Introduction to Oral History

February 5, 2015 @ 6:30 pm

Are you interested in oral history for a class paper or thesis project? Do you want to interview people but aren’t sure where to begin or what are productive approaches? On February 5 from 5-6:30pm in Graham Memorial Room 039, Evan Faulkenbury from the Southern Oral History Program will give a free workshop on the basics of oral history. You will learn about the do’s and don’ts of oral history and, by the end, you will feel confident enough to conduct your own interviews with anyone.

About the presenter: Evan Faulkenbury is a doctoral student in the Department of History at UNC. He received his B.A. in History at Liberty University and his M.A. in History from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. His research focuses on the black freedom movement in the South, particularly on voter registration activism and education during the 1960s. For his master’s thesis, he relied heavily on oral history to tell the story of Dr. Reginald Hawkins’ 1968 gubernatorial campaign in North Carolina as a social movement based on black power ideology. Evan coordinates the SOHP’s undergraduate internship program.
