About the Seminar

First Flight Venture Center (First Flight), a Research Triangle Park-based science and technology incubator for early stage science-based companies, has been awarded a $125,000 grant by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Federal and State Technology (FAST) Partnership Program. First Flight has designed the North Carolina implementation of FAST to incorporate its LiftOff program which includes grant writing and proposal development support for 6-8 North Carolina companies.

The LiftOff program identifies high potential early stage science-based companies, provides them with a non-dilutive funding strategic plan, identifies funding opportunities and facilitates all aspects of proposal preparation and submission.  The application process for the LiftOff program is rigorous and highly selective. The LiftOff model will be followed to select science-based companies in rural areas, as well as traditionally under-represented entrepreneurs, including women and minorities.  Approximately 6 eligible NC companies will receive strategic planning and grant management/writing support for SBIR/STTR grant submissions.  Discovery of these companies will be spearheaded through a series of 4 educational and training sessions across the state.
*More information about SBA FAST and FIRST FLIGHT is included below*

THE NC IMPLEMENTATION OF FAST
To increase the number of SBIR/STTR proposals submitted from North Carolina, First Flight will:

  • Conduct 4 (four) educational seminars across the state
  • Select 6-8 eligible companies to join the LiftOff program, receive a strategic funding plan and provide grant writing and management support to submit a SBIR/STTR proposal
  • Work collaboratively with FAST LiftOff companies to submit SBIR/STTR grants
