Two UNC-affiliated startups win KickStart awards, pursue novel therapies for cystic fibrosis, blood clots

More effective therapies for cystic fibrosis and blood clots could be on their way, thanks in part to a recent round of commercialization awards provided by KickStart Venture Services. The award funding will enable startup companies Eldec Pharmaceuticals and SonoVascular to complete high-impact projects as they work to translate UNC-owned intellectual property into therapies that help patients. The awards are part of a campus-wide effort to turn discoveries made in UNC-Chapel Hill’s laboratories into products and services that can benefit people outside the University. Since 2009, 63 IP-based companies have received consulting and $2 million in awards from KickStart. These companies have gone on to secure $28 million in SBIR/STTR grants and $270 million in total funding.
