The Evolving Life Science Patent Landscape in the U.S.
Nathan P. Letts, JD, PhD will discuss the impact on life science innovation and patents of recent Supreme Court decisions, including Association for Molecular Pathology v Myriad Genetics and Mayo Collaborative Services v Prometheus Laboratories. Building on previous Court cases, e.g., Merck KGAA v Integra Lifesciences and Justice Breyerâs dissent in Laboratory Corporation v Metabolite Laboratories, the Court appears to be establishing a unique of set rules for healthcare-related inventions. Dr. Letts will also describe patent drafting and claiming strategies to mitigate the impact of Myriad and Prometheus.
Dr. Letts is currently a Senior Counsel in the Durham office of The Eclipse Group LLP law firm. He has extensive patent experience in a range of advanced technologies, including biotechnology, diagnostics, medicinal chemistry, nanotechnology, and next generation sequencing. Dr. Lettsâs prior roles include serving as Vice President for Intellectual Property and Licensing at diaDexus, Inc. (South San Francisco); an attorney at Pennie & Edmonds LLP (New York) (now Jones Day); and a scientific advisor/patent agent at Cooper & Dunham LLP (New York).
