Efficient communication amongst a patient’s care team promotes better outcomes and decreases adverse events. Direct secure messaging (Direct), is an emerging, standardized protocol for secure email that offers the opportunity for healthcare providers to exchange patient data electronically, making it faster, more secure and less expensive than traditional paper faxing. Direct is included in all 2014 Certified EHRs and enables physicians and other healthcare providers to meet the Meaningful Use Stage 2 requirement for the exchange of clinical summaries at transitions of care.
