Innovate Carolina, the department of innovation and entrepreneurship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, launched its inaugural Signature Series at The Junction with the aptly titled “The Future of Work: Talent, Technology, and Trends” on September 7. The event brought together a diverse panel of experts from Gensler, Innovation Lab U.S. and Deloitte to explore the evolving landscape of work.

With a focus on rapid technological advancements and changing workforce dynamics, the conversation delved into how organizations and individuals can adapt and thrive in this new era. The moderator, Sheryl Waddell, Director of Economic Development and Innovation Hubs, led the in-depth discussion on workforce trends. Panelists covered topics ranging from remote work trends to the role of artificial intelligence in shaping industries.

When discussing the current trend of hybrid work arrangements, Chad Parker, Managing Director of Gensling, focused on the importance of culture and purpose in a company. “You have to recognize the need to create a culture that fosters a common mission, so that your people clearly and transparently know what you’re doing” Parker said. “[This] trend, I would say, is beyond the workspace into the importance of leadership, driving what that purpose is, and galvanizing around that is as a team.”

Switching from talent to technology, Sheryl Waddell also asked the panelists about what emerging technologies they see in their industries and how they are being applied. Blythe Kladney, Manager of Workforce Development Ecosystems and The Future of Work Institute at Deloitte, highlighted the ways that AR/VR have changed the way that consulting is done. “It’s important that we meet in person to establish personal connections and collaboration, but how do we do that?” Kladney said. “AR/VR opportunity gives us an opportunity if we are geographically spread out to connect in a way that we might not have been able to the other ways”. She emphasized that the future belongs to those who can adapt and upskill in response to evolving technological demands.

In addition to the insightful discussions, another highlight of the event was the networking opportunities it provided to the local community. Attendees had the opportunity to engage with experts in diverse fields, gaining valuable insights into the multifaceted aspects of the future of work. The Junction’s open and inviting atmosphere encouraged attendees to connect, share ideas and form new collaborations.

The event not only showcased The Junction as a hub for innovation, but also highlighted the importance of continuous learning in the ever-changing landscape of work. As business steps into the future, Innovate Carolina and The Junction will remain at the forefront of innovation.
